It occurs in Ibn Qutayba's Ta'wil mukhtalif al-hadith; al-Mas'udi speaks of ahl al-bahth wa l-nazar. Its synonyms are ahl al-kalam (used by al-Shafi'i) and al-mutakallimun (used by al-Ash'ari).
