He had first learned grammar from his maternal grandfather, the qadi Abu al-Fadl Yahya ibn 'Ali al-Kurashi; then, about 505/1111, he began attending his brother's teaching at the Great Mosque, learning to recite and starting on hadith with its isnads {cite:encyclopaedia-of-islam-2 vol. 3 p. 745-746}.",
