     "markdown": "In 621 AH the Tatars returned from the land of the Qipchaq and reached Rayy. Those of its people who had survived earlier had gone back to it, and they had no warning before the Tatars surrounded them and killed and enslaved them. The Tatars then marched to Qum and Kashan, and fought them, then turned to Hamadan and killed and committed atrocities there. They then marched to Tabriz, where a battle took place between them and the Khwarazmians {cite:shadharat-dhahab p. 95}.\n\nThis was the same force that had pursued the Khwarazm-shah in flight until he died. It completed its circuit from the land of the Qipchaq and Russians into the heart of the mountain lands. The people of Rayy who had escaped the first time had returned to their homes, believing the danger had passed, and the Tatars caught them in their homes a second time. This second massacre at Rayy is one of the clearest signs that the Tatar movement in the west was not a passing raid but a settled occupation."
