He came to the throne after the death of his brother [[person/mustafa-iii-uthmani|Mustafa III]], having been kept confined in his palace during the reigns of his brothers. {cite:dawlat-uthmaniyya-salabi p.316-318}\n\nRussia defeated the Ottomans at Varna, and the Grand Vizier asked for peace. The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca was signed in 1187 AH / 1774 CE. The treaty recognised the independence of Crimea and the freedom of Russian navigation in the Black and Mediterranean seas, and it allowed Russia to build a church in Galata and to protect the Christian churches.
