He ruled for thirty years, defeated the Brakna and Trarza Moors, closed his state to the French slave trade, survived capture by the king of Cayor, and was killed at the end of his reign — in 1807 by assassination on the French account, in 1806 in battle on the English one. {cite:wikipedia-abdul-kader-kane-en} {cite:wikipedia-abdul-kader-kane-fr}"

Rudolph Ware notes that another cleric refused the post first, and that Kane hesitated — the \"pious distance\" Senegambian clerics traditionally kept from political power — while David Robinson cites a more obscure tradition of a longer confusion before the election. He was inaugurated as Almaami in 1776, at about fifty years of age: kept in seclusion for a week while livestock were sacrificed for him, given the turban of office by a cleric, and sworn to by at least fifty chiefs, with the Qur'an, the Ishriniyyat and the Dala'il al-Khayrat recited and their reciters bound to correct him if he fell short of them. {cite:wikipedia-abdul-kader-kane-en} {cite:wikipedia-abdul-kader-kane-ur}"

He filled the territorial administration with loyal clerics, who in time made their electoral posts hereditary. In Cayor his fortune turned: after the new damel Amari Ngone Ndela repudiated Cayor's submission, Kane marched in 1796 with the largest army seen in Senegambia, but the damel poisoned the wells of his eastern provinces, the Torodbe army came out of the Ferlo desert to find neither food nor water, and it was routed at Bunxoy and Kane captured. Held honourably in Cayor until a new almami had been elected, he was then sent home. {cite:wikipedia-abdul-kader-kane-en} {cite:wikipedia-abdul-kader-kane-fr}\n\nAgainst the slave trade his record is argued over. His treaty barred the French from enslaving Futa Toro's people or carrying slaves through his territory, and Thomas Clarkson's letters praised \"the wise and virtuous Almaamy\"; other scholars answer that his policy was the traditional Islamic one — Muslims could not be enslaved, others still could be — and that his own subjects held slaves.
