When the small community asked who would dare recite the Qur'an openly before Quraysh, tradition tells that he volunteered — and was beaten for it, and did it anyway {cite:ibn-sad-tabaqat-bewley}.\n\nHe migrated twice — to Abyssinia, then to Medina — and fought at [[event/battle-of-badr|Badr]] {cite:ibn-sad-tabaqat-bewley}. The Prophet is remembered saying that whoever wanted to hear the Qur'an \"fresh as it came down\" should hear it from Ibn Mas'ud. Under Umar he was sent to Kufa as its teacher in scripture and law, where his readings and judgments seeded the city's school {cite:ibn-sad-tabaqat-bewley}. He died in Medina about 653."
