Hamdan as an early Isma'ili author and missionary (da'i) of Rayy, born in the district of Bashawuy near Rayy and well versed in hadith and Arabic poetry. He was chosen by the da'i Ghiyath as his deputy, then ousted Ghiyath's successor Abu Ja'far and became leader of the mission in Rayy. The article reports that he converted Ahmad b. 'Ali, governor of Rayy (304-311/916-924). When the Samanid troops occupied Rayy in 311/923-4 he went to Daylam, where his activity was at first supported by Mardawidj, who later turned against the Isma'ilis. He then fled to Muflih, governor of Adharbayjan, and according to Ibn Hajar died there in 322/933-4. {cite:encyclopaedia-of-islam-2 vol. 1 p. 144}"
