     "markdown": "A Qurayshi of modest clan standing, Abu Ubayda embraced Islam through [[person/abu-bakr|Abu Bakr]] among the earliest converts {cite:ibn-sad-tabaqat-bewley}. He fought at [[event/battle-of-badr|Badr]], and at [[event/battle-of-uhud|Uhud]] tradition remembers him pulling the chain-mail rings out of the Prophet's wounded face with his teeth {cite:ibn-sad-tabaqat-bewley}.\n\nAfter the Prophet's death he was sent to Syria with the armies; under Umar he held the high command, taking Damascus and then directing the victories of the [[event/battle-of-yarmuk|Yarmuk]] and the surrender of Jerusalem {cite:tabari-donner-1993}.
