The entry notes that Nafisi keeps 627 but relies on a spurious book and on Jami's statement that 'Attar gave the Asrar-nama to Jalal al-Din Rumi, who emigrated from Balkh with his father in about 616 or 618 AH. He was a pharmacist and doctor, and though not really a Sufi he admired the holy men and was edified by tales about them from his youth. {cite:encyclopaedia-of-islam-2 vol. 1 p. 802}"

The Mantiq al-tayr (the Conference of the Birds) describes the birds, led by the hoopoe, seeking the Simurgh, their elected king. Only thirty survive the seven dangerous valleys, and they recognise that they are the deity, merging in the Simurgh. The Musibat-nama describes a Sufi disciple advised by a pir to visit all mythical and cosmic beings, and finds the godhead in his own soul. The Ilahi-nama tells of a king's six sons who wish for worldly things and are drawn to higher aims. The Asrar-nama has no framing story and repeatedly mentions the gnostic motif of the pre-existing soul entangled in matter. The Khusraw-nama is a romantic novel of love and adventure, and the Pand-nama, a small moral treatise, enjoyed great popularity and was printed in Turkey at least eight times. {cite:encyclopaedia-of-islam-2 vol. 1 p. 803}"

The Ushturnama is built round a Turkish puppet player who stands for the deity, and its second part is almost entirely about Halladi, who speaks on the scaffold with Junayd, Ibn al-Khafif, Bayazid and Shibli and develops a monistic theology as God. The Diawhar al-dhat takes the same Halladi as its model of fana, and contains the story of 'Ali whispering divine secrets into a cistern which a reed later betrays; the entry sees a connection with the opening lines of Rumi's Mathnawi. {cite:encyclopaedia-of-islam-2 vol. 1 p. 803-804}"
