Ibn al-Imad reports that he was a Byzantine boy taken young, together with his brother, from the lands of Rum near the fortress of Dhu al-Kala, and that he learned the script in Palestine.      "markdown": "The source describes him as generous of spirit, of high ambition and brave, and for that reason he was called al-Maymun. He was in the service of al-Ikhshid together with Kafur. When al-Ikhshid died and Kafur took over the service of his son, Fatik disliked remaining in Egypt so as not to ride in Kafur's service. He took al-Fayyum and its territories as an iqta'. {cite:shadharat-dhahab p.14-15}\n\nHe died in Egypt in Shawwal 355 AH, according to Ibn al-Imad.
