In a six-year counter-invasion he broke the Persian Empire and restored the Cross to Jerusalem in 629 {cite:kaegi-2003}.\n\nIn those same years, the hadith tradition preserves, a letter arrived from a prophet in Arabia summoning him to Islam. Heraclius is shown questioning the merchant [[person/abu-sufyan-ibn-harb|Abu Sufyan]] — then still an opponent of Muhammad — and concluding that what he described bore the marks of prophecy {cite:ibn-sad-tabaqat-bewley}. Whether the audience happened as told is debated; what is certain is that within a decade his armies met the Muslims and lost Syria {cite:kaegi-2003}.\n\nHe died in February 641, having won the greatest war of his century — and lost the peace to a force no strategist had planned for."
