     "markdown": "The chief judge Shihab al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Mahmud ibn Abd Allah ibn Mahmud, known as Ibn al-Furfur, of Damascus and a Shafii. He was born in the middle of Shawwal in the year 852. He studied with al-Burhan al-Baelouni, Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Shaykh Khalil, al-Najm, son of the judge of Ajlun, al-Shams al-Sa'di, Abu al-Mahasin ibn Shahin and others, and he excelled and stood out among his peers {cite:shadharat-dhahab p. 462}.\n\nHe combined learning, leadership, generosity and good company. Al-Hamawi went so far as to call him \"the last of the leaders of the world without qualification, and the sultan of the jurists and the leaders.\" He was appointed chief judge of the Shafiis in Damascus, and then the judgeship of Egypt was added to his post. This was on Thursday, the fourth of Rabi al-Awwal {cite:shadharat-dhahab p. 462}.\n\nHe died in the year 911 {cite:shadharat-dhahab p. 463}."
