He was made corporal in 1865, sergeant on 9 August 1866 and second lieutenant \"à titre indigène\" on 15 May 1868 — the youngest African to receive the epaulette — and became a knight of the Légion d'honneur in November 1869, the first Black man to receive that distinction. In 1872, at Bakel, he led the prayer at the mosque dressed in a boubou, and was reprimanded for it. In 1878 he was allowed to travel to Paris for the Universal Exhibition. {cite:wikipedia-mamadou-racine-fr}\n\nFrench law limited the promotion of indigenous soldiers to lieutenant, and his rise stalled for want of a vacancy; he was promoted lieutenant on 17 March 1880. Wounded at the taking of Daba in Bélédougou on 16 January 1883, he was proposed for captain by several officers, including Colonel Borgnis-Desbordes, against strong resistance in the army, where many whites refused to have a Black man command white non-commissioned officers. Exceptionally, President Jules Grévy signed a decree on 19 October 1883 making Mamadou Racine the first African captain of the French colonial marine infantry; he was first posted to the staff of Haut-Sénégal, so that no whites were under his command. {cite:wikipedia-mamadou-racine-fr}\n\nIn March 1886 he carried to Colonel Frey the treaty of Kéniébakoro by which Samori Ture recognised French sovereignty over the left bank of the Niger, and he became for the colonial authorities a guide, interpreter and diplomat with France's new ally. He commanded the post of Nyamina in 1889 and then that of Goumbo in 1896, the year of his retirement. Archinard named him chief of Kayes right bank and its dependent territories on 31 October 1890, and General de Trentinian, lieutenant-governor of the Sudan, named him fama (\"king\") of Bambouck on 27 March 1899 — an honorary post that placed him as an intermediary between the colonial administrators and the colonised populations.
