     "markdown": "Qatada ibn Idris al-Alawi, emir of Mecca, an Alawi sharif of the Husaynid line. According to Ibn al-Athir, his rule extended from the borders of Yemen to Medina, and he had the fortress of Yanbu. He acquired many mamluks, and the Arabs feared him. {cite:kamil-ibn-al-athir p.426-427}\n\nAt the start of his rule he was of good conduct: he removed corrupt slaves, protected the land, and treated the pilgrims well. Ibn al-Athir then reports that he behaved badly, renewed unlawful taxes in Mecca, and in some years robbed pilgrims. {cite:kamil-ibn-al-athir p.426-427}\n\nIt is said that at his death in 618 AH his son al-Hasan strangled him. He used to compose poetry. When he was summoned to attend the emir of the pilgrim caravan he refused, was rebuked from Baghdad, and answered with verses. {cite:kamil-ibn-al-athir p.426-427}"
