He studied at Isfahan while his father was deputy sultan until he surpassed his peers; when the enemy seized Isfahan he moved to Baghdad, taking fiqh from Siraj al-Din al-Hirqili and the rational sciences from Taj al-Din al-Armawi, then went to Rum to Athir al-Din al-Abhari for dialectic and philosophy. He entered Cairo and held the judgeship of Qus as deputy for Qadi Taj al-Din Ibn Bint al-A'azz, administering it well, and taught at the Shafi'i and the Mashhad al-Husayn.
