     "markdown": "Maragha is a city in Azerbaijan that was called Afrahrudh. [[person/marwan-ibn-muhammad|Marwan ibn Muhammad]] camped near it on his return from the expedition of Mawqan and Jilan. There was much dung in it, in which the animals rolled, so people said \"come to the village of Maragha\", and then dropped the word \"village\". {cite:futuh-buldan-maarif-1407}\n\nIts people had taken refuge with Marwan, who bought it. People grew numerous there and cultivated it. Then it was confiscated along with the estates of the Banu Umayya, and it became the property of one of the daughters of al-Rashid. {cite:futuh-buldan-maarif-1407}\n\nIn the caliphate of al-Rashid, Khuzayma ibn Khazim governed Armenia and Azerbaijan. He built its wall and established it as a garrison city, and settled a dense force in it. When Babak appeared, people took refuge in it.
