"en": "A question about a patient about to undergo surgery under anaesthesia, asking whether general or partial anaesthesia breaks his ablution; Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyya answered that both general and partial anaesthesia break ablution in sharia, because each creates a likelihood that something invalidating passes from the body without awareness. Dar al-Ifta defined anaesthesia from Kashshaf Istilahat al-Funun, al-Mu'jam al-Wasit and the medical glossary of the Arabic Language Academy, dividing it into general, spinal and local; it explained that loss of reason in any form breaks ablution by the consensus reported by Ibn al-Mundhir, that Ibn Qudama counted drugs that remove reason as invalidating by consensus because such people's senses are further gone than a sleeper's, and that al-Nawawi stated that loss of reason through banj or medicine breaks ablution. It ruled that general anaesthesia breaks ablution as it removes reason, and that spinal anaesthesia, though it does not remove reason, removes control of and sensation in the limbs from the navel down, including the two passages, so it creates a likelihood of something invalidating passing; it cited the hadith that the eyes are the drawstring of the anus and the hadith on the relaxing of the joints, and the principle that sleep was made an invalidator only because it makes such a passage likely, the cause being put in place of the effect, as al-Munawi, al-Shurunbulali and Ali al-Qari explain.",

"markdown": "Dar al-Ifta began by explaining what anaesthesia is: the administration of an anaesthetic under medical supervision for a therapeutic purpose, an anaesthetic being a substance that affects sensation and consciousness; it quoted the definitions of al-Tahanawi in Kashshaf Istilahat al-Funun (1/394), al-Mu'jam al-Wasit (1/220) and the medical glossary of the Arabic Language Academy (1/46), and explained that medical anaesthesia means giving the patient drugs such as banj so that he loses sensation and consciousness, in degrees: general, in which the patient loses consciousness and perception throughout his body, a state deeper than sleep; spinal, in which the body below the navel is numbed; and local, in which only the site concerned is numbed. {cite:dar-alifta fatwa 8974} It then ruled that loss of reason and perception in any form, whether by fainting, madness or the like, is among the things that break ablution, quoting [[person/ibn-al-mundhir-al-naysaburi|Ibn al-Mundhir]] in al-Awsat (1/155) on the consensus that purification is required of one whose reason departs through madness or fainting, and in al-Ijma (p. 33) that loss of reason in any form breaks ablution; [[person/ibn-qudama-al-maqdisi|Ibn Qudama]] in [[work/al-mughni|al-Mughni]] (1/128) that madness, fainting, intoxication and similar drugs that remove reason break ablution, little or much, by consensus, because such people's senses are further gone than a sleeper's, since they cannot be roused, and that sleep in general breaks ablution according to the generality of scholars; and [[person/al-nawawi|al-Nawawi]] in [[work/al-majmu-sharh-al-muhadhdhab|al-Majmu']] (2/21) that there is no difference here between one sitting and others, and in his [[work/al-minhaj-sharh-sahih-muslim|commentary on Muslim]] (4/74) that scholars agree that loss of reason through madness, fainting, intoxication by wine or nabidh, banj or medicine breaks ablution whether little or much. {cite:dar-alifta fatwa 8974}\n\nLooking at the kinds of anaesthesia, Dar al-Ifta explained that general anaesthesia, in which the patient loses all sensation, breaks ablution because it removes reason; and that spinal anaesthesia, although not accompanied by loss of reason, removes control of and full sensation in the limbs from the navel down, which includes the two passages, and what leaves them breaks ablution by agreement, as [[person/ibn-rushd|Ibn Rushd]] reports in [[work/bidayat-al-mujtahid|Bidayat al-Mujtahid]] (1/40), so losing control of them creates a likelihood that something invalidating passes; loss of reason or sleep was made an invalidator only because it makes it likely that something leaves the two passages without sensation or control, and spinal anaesthesia exceeds sleep in its effect, since a sleeper moves his limbs and wakes to relieve himself, unlike a patient under spinal anaesthesia. {cite:dar-alifta fatwa 8974} It cited the hadith of Mu'awiya in Ibn Majah and Ahmad that the eyes are the drawstring of the anus and when the eyes sleep the drawstring is loosened, with al-Munawi's remark in Fayd al-Qadir (4/398) that purity is broken by sleep and whatever else removes reason not for their own sake but because they make likely the passing of what breaks purity, and al-Shurunbulali in Maraqi al-Falah (p. 39) that the invalidator is not sleep but what a sleeper cannot be free of, the apparent cause being put in its place; and the hadith of [[person/abdullah-ibn-abbas|Ibn Abbas]] that one who sleeps prostrating owes no ablution until he lies down, for when he lies down his joints relax, with [[person/ali-al-qari|Ali al-Qari]]'s explanation in [[work/mirqat-al-mafatih|Mirqat al-Mafatih]] (1/365) that one whose joints relax is not normally free of something passing, and what is established by habit is like what is certain. {cite:dar-alifta fatwa 8974}\n\nDar al-Ifta concluded that both general and partial anaesthesia break ablution in sharia: general anaesthesia because of the total loss of perception it causes, beyond the state of sleep in which a passage such as wind goes unnoticed; and partial anaesthesia because it removes sensation in the lower half of the body, which includes the two passages, together with all control over or sensation of what leaves them, so that anaesthesia of both kinds creates a likelihood of an invalidating passage without perception or sensation, the cause is put in place of the effect, and ablution is broken. {cite:dar-alifta fatwa 8974}"
