The Battle of Hunayn

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

In year 8 of the Hijra the Muslims set out from Mecca with a large army, and in the valley of Hunayn between Mecca and Ta'if they met the armies of the tribes Hawazin and Thaqif. The enemy's ambush worked at first, but the Prophet ﷺ stood firm and called the Muslims back, and they returned and won. From the spoils of this battle the Prophet gave gifts to many people to soften their hearts.

The battle of Hunayn was fought in Shawwal of year 8 AH (January 630 CE) in the valley of Hunayn between Mecca and al-Ta'if. Malik ibn Awf al-Nasri gathered the tribes Hawazin and Thaqif and brought their wealth and women so they would fight to the end. The Muslims, twelve thousand strong, came down into the valley at dawn, and the tribes lay in ambush in the passes and shot at them with arrows; the Muslim cavalry broke in the early morning. The Prophet stood firm with a group of Companions and called the people to him, and the Muslims returned and fought until they won. The captives and spoils were gathered at al-Ji'rana, and the Prophet ﷺ divided them and gave gifts to reconcile hearts; the sira recalls that a verse was revealed about this day.
