The battle of Yamama, of the Ridda wars: Abu Bakr sent Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) to Yamama to fight Musaylima in 12 AH by al-Baladhuri's dating. Al-Rijal ibn Unfuwa was the first to meet the Muslims and fell; the people's chiefs and the Qur'an reciters fell as martyrs, then the Muslims rallied and God sent down His victory. The Muslims forced their enemies into a garden then called 'the Garden of Death', where Musaylima fell — the tellings differ on who struck him: Khaddash ibn Bashir, Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Tha'laba, Abu Dujana (may God be pleased with him) and Wahshi ibn Harb are named, some saying they shared the deed. Among its martyrs were Zayd ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), Thabit ibn Qays, Abu Hudhayfa ibn Utba (may God be pleased with him) and Salim, Abu Hudhayfa's client. Mujja'a ibn Murara made peace with Khalid, saying most of Yamama's people had not come out to fight; then Khalid went to Bahrain leaving Samura ibn Amr al-Anbari as governor of Yamama.
