The Conquest of Syria

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

When Abu Bakr finished with the apostates he sent the armies to Syria under three banners — Khalid ibn Sa'id, Shurahbil ibn Hasana (may God be pleased with him) and Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) — twenty-four thousand in all. Then Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) marched from Iraq and was made commander over every war, and Umar appointed Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (may God be pleased with him) over all Syria.

Al-Baladhuri records that when Abu Bakr was done with the Ridda peoples he sent the armies to Syria, raising three banners for Khalid ibn Sa'id, Shurahbil ibn Hasana (may God be pleased with him) and Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him), and put the latter two and Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan (may God be pleased with him) over the roads of Ayla and Tabuk — twenty-four thousand in all. Then Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) marched from Iraq and was made commander in every war. His account names the day of Ajnadayn, the taking of Busra by treaty, Shurahbil's taking of the Jordan by force except Tiberias, then the day of Fahl and Marj al-Saffar, then the conquest of Damascus and Jerusalem. Umar gave Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (may God be pleased with him) charge of all Syria.
