The Farewell Sermon at Arafat

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

At Mount Arafat the Prophet ﷺ preached to the largest gathering the Muslims had ever seen around him, teaching that people's lives and wealth are inviolable, and commending women and God's Book to them.

On the day of Arafa, 9 Dhu al-Hijja 10 AH, the Prophet ﷺ delivered the comprehensive Farewell Sermon to more than a hundred thousand. He opened: 'people, hear my words — perhaps I shall not meet you after this year in this place, ever'. He declared their lives and wealth inviolable like the sanctity of that day, month and town, and set aside the Jahiliyya's vendettas and usury. He commended good treatment of women, and said he left them God's Book, after which they would never stray if they held it — and that there is no prophet after him nor community after them. They witnessed he had delivered his message, and he raised his forefinger to the sky saying 'O God, bear witness', three times. Rabi'a ibn Umayya ibn Khalaf relayed his words to the crowd.
