The Year of Delegations

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

In the ninth year after the Hijra the Arab tribes came to Medina from every side to pledge Islam to the Prophet ﷺ, so much that historians call that year the Year of Delegations. Each delegation asked the Prophet its questions and carried Islam's teachings back to its people.

The Year of Delegations is the ninth year after the Hijra (630–631 CE): after the conquest of Mecca, the expedition to Tabuk and the conversion of Thaqif, 'the delegations of the Arabs struck toward him from every side' as Ibn Hisham transmits from Abu Ubayda. Dozens of tribal delegations came to Medina — Tamim, Hawazin, Ghatafan, Bakr ibn Wa'il, Abd al-Qays, Thaqif and the peoples of Yemen and Bahrayn — each asking about Islam, pledging, and carrying the Prophet ﷺ's instructions home, some taking teachers with them. Ibn Hisham devotes the fourth part of his sira to narrating these delegations one by one; some left lasting traces, like the Banu Abd al-Qays who came twice. In history the Year of Delegations marks the peninsula's political turn after the fall of Mecca.
