al-Mu'tadid bi-llah

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

Al-Mu'tadid Billah was the Abbasid caliph, acclaimed heir in Safar 278 AH, caliph from 279 AH until his death in 289 AH.

Al-Mu'tadid Billah, the Abbasid caliph, was acclaimed heir in Safar 278 AH; al-Tabari records that in 279 AH Ja'far al-Mufawwid was deposed from the succession and al-Mu'tadid took office in Muharram. Al-Mas'udi names him Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Talha al-Muwaffaq, his mother a Roman umm walad called Dirar, acclaimed on the day his uncle al-Mu'tamid died — Tuesday, twelve nights remaining of Rajab 279 AH. At al-Tabari he marched on Banu Shayban in 280 AH and fought a battle with the Kurds and Arabs in 281 AH; al-Suyuti records al-Muwaffaq giving him Ibn Tulun's offices after his death in 270 AH and sending him to Egypt, where a great battle with Khumarawayh went to the Egyptians. Al-Mas'udi says he camped against Amid in 286 AH and besieged it until its lord surrendered on terms. He died in 289 AH.
