Sultan Bayezid II, son of Mehmed the Conqueror, ruled 886–918 AH; a mild-mannered, literature-loving sultan who refused to split the state, so his brother Cem fled to Egypt.

Sultan Bayezid II, son of Mehmed the Conqueror, ruled 886–918 AH. Al-Salabi describes him as a mild sultan fond of literature, versed in the law, passionate about astronomy, who used Greek and Bulgarian experts to improve roads and bridges. Early in his rule his brother Prince Cem broke with him and the people of Bursa proposed splitting the state into European and Asian halves; Bayezid refused, marched on Bursa, and Cem fled to the Mamluk sultan Qaytbay in Egypt. He made peace with the Mamluks in 1491 CE, received the first Russian envoy in 1492, answered Andalusian Muslims' plea with a fleet under Kemal Reis, and won a naval victory over the Venetians at Lepanto gulf in 905 AH (1499 CE). He died in 918 AH.
