Husayn ibn Ali

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

Husayn was the Prophet ﷺ's younger grandson, son of Fatima and Ali, born in Medina about 626 CE. He was offered safety if he accepted a ruler he saw as unjust; he refused, and died at Karbala in 680 CE — and millions still retell his choice every year.

Husayn ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him) was the Prophet ﷺ's younger grandson, son of Fatima, born in Medina in 4 AH (about January 626 CE) and raised in the house of prophecy; the accounts recall his likeness to the Prophet. When Mu'awiya died in 680 CE and Yazid was installed — the first hereditary succession — Husayn refused the pledge; the Kufans invited him promising support, so he set out for Iraq with a small band of family and companions. Umayyad troops blocked him at Karbala, and on the tenth of Muharram 61 AH he and most of his party died, and the women and children — his sister Zaynab among them — were taken captive. Karbala became the highest example of martyrdom in Islam: a story each generation retells to argue about justice and power.
