Jalal al-Din Mankubirti, the eldest son of Muhammad Khwarazmshah and the last Khwarazmian sultan, carried the state's banner after his father. Ibn al-Athir records that he fought Genghis Khan on the Indus river and was defeated — after doing among the Tatar ranks what amazed them until Genghis Khan admired him; he then ruled the Jibal and Azerbaijan, took Tiflis from the Georgians on 8 Rabi' al-Awwal 623 AH and besieged Akhlat until it was his; he opposed al-Malik al-Ashraf and Kayqubad of Rum until defeated by them, and was beaten by the Tatars near Amid in 628 AH, after which news of him ceased.
