Sulayt ibn Qays
سليط بن قيس
The Badri Umar bound to Abu 'Ubayda as advisor — his counsel: let the enemy cross, keep the bridge for retreat — who answered the taunt of cowardice 'I am bolder than you in soul and tribe, but I advised'; and obeyed though unconvinced 1.

Overview
Sulayt ibn Qays, one of the people of Badr, whose reports appear in al-Mas'udi's account of the Battle of the Bridge 2.
His counsel
al-Mas'udi reports that Umar associated him with Abu Ubayd and instructed him to consult him and not to oppose him. His view was that the Muslims should not cross the Euphrates until the enemy crossed to them, and that the bridge should not be cut, so that it would remain a refuge for them if they were defeated 2.
When Abu Ubayd said to him, "You have been cowardly", he answered that he was bolder of spirit and of tribe than he was, and that he had only given his opinion. He said that he would hear and obey, out of dislike for disobeying the obedience 2.
