Salih Reis, beylerbey of Algiers from Safar 960 AH (January 1552 CE) to his death of plague in Rajab 963 AH (1556 CE) at seventy. He worked on unity between Algiers' parts and subduing the rest of the Sahara, with three external aims: removing the Spanish from Algerian soil, ending Sa'di harassment, and marching on al-Andalus. He subdued the independent emirates, stood with Abu Hassun al-Wattasi — the Sa'di forces were beaten near Badis, Taza fell, and he entered Fez in Safar 961 AH (January 1554 CE) where the sermon went to the Ottoman sultan and Morocco's annexation was declared. Sultan Suleiman ordered him against Oran and sent forty ships; he gathered some seventy ships and forty thousand soldiers but died of plague before marching.
