Summary

In his commentary on Hadir al-Alam al-Islami (The Present State of the Islamic World), Shakib Arslan describes the Ottoman siege of the city from the time of Bayezid I, the siege under Murad II, and its conquest at the hands of Mehmed the Conqueror. 1

After the conquest

Arslan mentions the plunder of the city for three days, and Friday prayer in Hagia Sophia on the fourth day. He counts the conquest among the most important turning points in the region. 1

A note

The source is a single one. Arslan's dates (the start of the siege in 1396 CE, and the abjad count of 853 AH) and what he relates about the artillery of Mehmed II need an additional source before they are relied on. The book does not specify the day of the conquest; this needs an additional source.

السلطان محمد الفاتح

Mehmed the Conqueror, seventh of the Ottoman kings — sultan for thirty-one years from 856, 'the greatest of their sultans in jihad', who laid the Ottoman state's foundations and its statutes. His fame rests on the conquest of Constantinople: he drove ships over land, besieged it fifty days and took it on Wednesday 20 Jumada II 857, prayed Friday in Hagia Sophia, built the Eight Madrasas with endowed stipend-ranks for students, and drew the age's great scholars — Ali al-Qushji, al-Tusi, al-Kurani — till Istanbul became mother of the world.
