Overview

Sulayman ibn Rabi'a al-Bahili used to breed and to Arabize horses in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), that is, to distinguish the hybrid from the purebred among them 2.

The horse of Amr

Amr ibn Ma'd Yakrib came to him with a bay horse, and he recorded it as a hybrid, so Amr called Umar as a witness against him. Sulayman ordered a short-walled, shaking vessel to be filled with water. A purebred horse was brought, and it hastened, lowered its hoof, stretched its neck and drank. Then Amr's horse was brought; it hastened and did as the purebred had done, then bent one of its hooves slightly and drank. Umar said: "You are Sulayman of the horses" 2.
