Overview

In 287 al-Mu'tadid entered his pleasure-ground at Baraz al-Rawz and ordered a palace built on a spot he chose there; the materials were carried to it and work begun. Those with houses and shops at Bab al-Shammasiyya were turned out — "take your rubble and go" — the enclosure wall was traced, and a platform on the Tigris begun for him to move into until the house and palace were done; but al-Mu'tadid fell ill, by agreement of the accounts, and died before its completion 2.
