Definition

Iltifat is turning to the right or the left; the jurists use the word in its lexical sense. 1 It differs from inhiraf, which is leaning away from a thing, since a person may lean while facing the same direction. 1

Ruling

Turning is sometimes asked for and sometimes forbidden.

  • It is recommended while turning to the right and the left at the hayya 'ala formulae of the adhan, as Bilal did, according to most jurists; some exempt one who calls the adhan for himself, for a small group, or for a newborn. 1
  • Turning to the right and left is a sunna at the greeting that ends prayer. 1
  • Turning the face in prayer is disliked by the four Imams, following the hadith warning against turning in prayer. 2
  • Turning the chest or the whole body in prayer is disliked by some jurists, and some hold the prayer invalid if the feet are moved. 2
  • The preacher is disliked from turning in the sermon; some add the same dislike for the listener. 2

The ruling on one who abandons prayer

Al-Sallabi quotes Ali: whoever does not pray is an unbeliever. He then reports from al-Nawawi the dispute over one who neglects prayer while believing it obligatory: the majority (Malik, al-Shafi'i) hold him a sinner to be asked to repent, others hold him an unbeliever, a view ascribed to Ali; Abu Hanifa and the Kufans hold him not an unbeliever but to be disciplined.
