Overview
Ibn al-Nadim transmits from an old manuscript, which may be from al-Ma'mun's library, translated by Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Salam from the Kitab al-hunafa'. 1
Its contents
It says that the prophets were one hundred and twenty-four thousand in number, and that the messengers who were addressed by revelation orally were three hundred and fifteen. It says that all the revealed books were one hundred and four, among them one hundred scrolls (sahifa) between Adam and Moses. 1
The scrolls of Adam were twenty-one, the scrolls of Seth twenty-nine, the scrolls of Enoch, who is Idris, thirty, and the scrolls of Abraham ten, and the scrolls of Moses ten before the Torah. Then the Torah was sent down on ten tablets, which it says were green, and whose writing was red. Ibn al-Nadim comments that the Jews do not know this description. 1
It mentions that the Psalms given to David were one hundred and fifty psalms, and that among the books of the Jews are the Mishnah and other books it names. 1
The figures here come from an old source that Ibn al-Nadim transmits. It needs a further source.
