Summary

On al-Baqara 262-264, Sha'rawi treats the blight of charity: reminding and harm. He holds that both spoil the gift and void its reward, and that a kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by harm 1 3.

Reminding that lasts

He reads the word "then" in the verse as showing that reminding is forbidden at the time of giving and after it, since the giver may delay the reminder, so abstention must last 2 4.

Giving for show

He gives the image of a smooth rock covered with earth, which the rain strips clean. So the one who gives to be seen loses what he gave 5.

A narrated saying

He cites a saying about a man who fought to be called brave and was refused reward. The footnote names al-Hakim and Muslim; the chain was not checked 5.

Not yet checked

This is Sha'rawi's reading of the verses. The classical exegesis of reminding and harm, the academic view and any non-Sunni view have not been checked.

The ruling on one who abandons prayer

Al-Sallabi quotes Ali: whoever does not pray is an unbeliever. He then reports from al-Nawawi the dispute over one who neglects prayer while believing it obligatory: the majority (Malik, al-Shafi'i) hold him a sinner to be asked to repent, others hold him an unbeliever, a view ascribed to Ali; Abu Hanifa and the Kufans hold him not an unbeliever but to be disciplined.
