Overview
Ibn al-Nadim, in the Fihrist, records what reached him about the codices (masahif) of the Companions. In the arrangement of the codex of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, as transmitted by al-Fadl ibn Shadhan, there are one hundred and sixteen surahs, among them the two surahs of al-Khal' and al-Hafd. 2
In the codex of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him), as transmitted by Abd Khayr, he collected the Qur'an after the death of the Prophet ﷺ. Ibn al-Nadim mentions that in his time he saw a codex in the hand of Ali, from which some leaves had fallen, in the possession of Abu Ya'la Hamza al-Husayni. 2
He also transmits the words of Ata' ibn Yasar on the number of surahs, verses, and words. These are reports that Ibn al-Nadim transmits, and their verification needs a further source. 2
