Al-Multazam (the stretch between the Black Stone and the Kaaba door)

المُلْتَزَم

Al-Multazam is the stretch of the Kaaba wall from the corner of the Black Stone to the door of the House, so called because people embrace it. Embracing it is recommended after the farewell circumambulation, and for the Hanafis and Malikis also after the arrival circumambulation. The jurists describe how to do it and when, after the two rak'as of the circumambulation.

Summary

Al-Multazam is the stretch between the corner with the Black Stone and the door of the Kaaba, about four cubits wide, named for the embracing of it. 1

Ruling

It is recommended to embrace it after the farewell circumambulation, following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. The Hanafis and Malikis hold it recommended after the arrival circumambulation too; the Shafi'is state it generally after circumambulation. 1

How and what to say

The pilgrim presses his chest, face and right cheek to the wall, spreads his arms and palms, holds the curtain, and makes supplication humbly, asking for the good of this world and the next. If he cannot reach the curtain he lays his hands on the wall. 2

When

The Malikis, Hanbalis and, in the sounder view, the Hanafis recommend coming to it after the two rak'as of the circumambulation and before going out to Safa. The Shafi'is recommend it before prayer, which is also a second Hanafi view. 2 3
