Nafkh (blowing)

النَّفْخ

Nafkh, in the lexicon, is sending out air; one blows into a horn to make it sound. 1 Most jurists dislike blowing into food and drink; Abu Yusuf allows it unless it makes a sound, and al-Mardawi sees no dislike when eating needs it. 1 2 Blowing on purpose during prayer invalidates it in general, and the schools differ on the details. 2 3 From the moment the spirit is breathed into it, the foetus counts as a person for inheritance and for the ghurra compensation, and abortion is forbidden. The blast of the trumpet is a matter of belief. 3 4

The ruling on one who abandons prayer

Al-Sallabi quotes Ali: whoever does not pray is an unbeliever. He then reports from al-Nawawi the dispute over one who neglects prayer while believing it obligatory: the majority (Malik, al-Shafi'i) hold him a sinner to be asked to repent, others hold him an unbeliever, a view ascribed to Ali; Abu Hanifa and the Kufans hold him not an unbeliever but to be disciplined.
