Qur'anic factors of social decline

عوامل انحدار المجتمع في القرآن

Arjun lists three signs of decline: decay at the top of society, which warns of general corruption; luxury, which kills honour and makes vice ordinary; and reliance on oppressors. He reads the Qur'an as showing that social corruption is requited faster than unbelief in this life 1.

Overview

'Arjun names three signs that precede a society's decline: corruption at the summit — a rot from the top that heralds general ruin 2; wallowing in luxury, which kills zeal and pride and makes vice familiar 2; and inclining toward the wrongdoers 3. He argues from al-Isra' and Hud that God takes a people for social corruption faster than for unbelief, the penalty of wrong and corruption being immediate in this world.
