Tatfful (entering another's meal uninvited)

التطفل

Tatfful is entering another person's place to eat his food without his leave or knowledge of his consent, or with consent presumed by a sound sign. It is forbidden for the Malikis, Shafiis and Hanbalis, and makes a person a sinner if repeated, on the hadith «whoever is invited and does not come has disobeyed God and His messenger, and whoever enters uninvited enters as a thief and leaves as a plunderer». The testimony of a habitual uninvited guest is rejected, because it is base and lacking in manliness. 1 2 3

Overview

Tatfful is entering another person's place to eat his food without his leave or knowledge of his consent. 1

Definition and related terms

The tufayli is one who enters a people without being invited. 1 A guest is one who attends another's meal by invitation or with his known consent; the tufayli is his opposite. 2 A dhayfan is one who comes with a guest as an intruder; a fudooli acts for another without leave or authority, and the intrusion is most common in material things. 2

Ruling

The Malikis, Shafiis and Hanbalis say it is forbidden to attend another's meal uninvited and without knowledge of consent, and it makes one a sinner if repeated, on the hadith «whoever is invited and does not come has disobeyed God and His messenger; whoever enters uninvited enters as a thief and leaves as a plunderer». 2 The Shafiis add that it is intrusion when a scholar or a Sufi is invited and his followers come without the host's leave. 2

The testimony of the intruder

All agree that the testimony of a habitual intruder is rejected, since he eats what is unlawful and does base things that take away manliness; the repetition is required because he may have a doubt of leave until the host forbids him. 3
