Overview
The conquest of Aleppo: Abu 'Ubayda marched from Qinnasrin — whose people had broken their treaty, so he sent al-Samt al-Kindi to besiege and retake it, winning cattle and sheep — and made terms with the Arabs of Aleppo's countryside on jizya; they later converted. He came to Aleppo with 'Iyad b. Ghanm al-Fihri in the van; the citizens fortified themselves, the Muslims besieged them, and they soon asked peace and safety for themselves, children, city, churches and fortress — granted, with a site chosen for the mosque. 'Iyad concluded the treaty and Abu 'Ubayda ratified it; some say they were to share their houses and churches, others that the citizens had withdrawn to Antioch, sued for peace, and returned when it was done 1.
