Overview

The Umayyad caliph al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik died in the middle of Jumada al-Akhira 96 AH, on Saturday, according to al-Sallabi. 1

The length of his caliphate and his age

al-Tabari gives different accounts of the length of his caliphate and his age. 2 al-Suyuti says that he died aged fifty-one. He quotes al-Dhahabi that jihad lived in his days, and that great conquests were made in them as in the days of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him). 3

The question of succession

al-Sallabi says that al-Walid wanted to depose his brother Sulayman and appoint his son Abd al-Aziz, but Sulayman refused. Only al-Hajjaj, Qutayba and close associates gave the oath to Abd al-Aziz, and Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz refused to give it. 1
