Summary
In 612 AH the Georgians rose up and raided Azerbaijan, killing, enslaving and taking about one hundred thousand captives 1.
The raid came at a time when the great powers of the region were weak. The Iraqi Seljuks were nearing their end, and the rulers of Adharbayjan and al-Jazira were divided, while the Georgian kings were at the height of their power after their conquests in Armenia and Arran. Ibn al-ʿImad mentions elsewhere that the Georgians had taken a city from the Seljuk realms some years before and ruined and burned it, so that their repeated raids were a matter the Muslims of the Caucasus suffered from 2.
Azerbaijan soon knew an evil greater than the Georgian raid. A few years later Tatar advance guards crossed it in pursuit of the Khwarazm-shah, and they ravaged Qazvin, Tabriz and Maragha, so that the news of the Georgians seemed like a drop in the sea beside the news of the Tatars 3.
