Overview
In 132 AH a letter from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Imam to Abu Muslim fell into the hands of Marwan ibn Muhammad, who ordered Ibrahim seized. He was then killed. 1
What the sources report
Al-Suyuti says that Muhammad al-Imam appointed his son Ibrahim as his successor. When news of this reached Marwan, he imprisoned him and then killed him. So Muhammad appointed his brother Abd Allah, who was al-Saffah, and their followers gathered around him. 2
Al-Mas'udi describes how he was killed: his head was placed in a leather bag with powdered lime in it. He quotes verses from a letter he wrote to Abu Muslim. 3
Al-Tabari refers to the killing in a heading of his index. 4
