    Summary

Abdelmadjid Tebboune is an Algerian politician who has served as president of Algeria and minister of national defence since 19 December 2019. Born on 17 November 1945 at Mécheria, he spent decades in the senior administration and in government before reaching the presidency: he was minister of housing in 2001–2002 and again from 2012 to 2017, and prime minister from May to August 2017. 1 2

Since the death of Liamine Zéroual in 2026, the English article notes, Tebboune is the only living Algerian president. 1

    Path to the presidency

Tebboune's ministerial career ran through the housing portfolio twice, with the premiership in between at the end of it: appointed prime minister in May 2017, he left that office in August 2017. 1

He was elected in the presidential election of December 2019, held after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's resignation, and took office on 19 December 2019. The presidency had been held in the interim by Abdelkader Bensalah, chairman of the Council of the Nation, as acting head of state from April 2019; the English article's infobox names Bensalah expressly as acting predecessor, and the Urdu article likewise calls him acting head of state, so this record carries no succession relation for the presidency. 1 3

    Faith

No source consulted names a school for Tebboune. The Arabic article's infobox gives his religion as Islam in general, and Wikidata gives Islam in general; the English article carries no religion field, and his early schooling reported there is formation, not an attestation of his own school. His faith is therefore recorded as unknown. 2 4 1
