Overview
Abu 'Awana — the imam, precise hafiz and traditionist of Basra al-Waddah ibn 'Abdallah al-Yashkuri; he narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri, Shu'ba, Qays ibn al-Rabi', al-Rabi' al-Zahrani, Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd ibn Hisab, Musaddad, Luwayn, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Aruba, Hammam and many others. 1
The critics on him
Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan said: how like Sufyan's is his hadith — though on Qatada he is not that strong. 'Affan heard Shu'ba say: if Abu 'Awana narrates to you from his book it is sound, but his memory is worthless. He died in 176 AH. 2
