Afif al-Din al-Tilimsani

عفيف الدين التلمساني

c. 1213 CE · c. 610 AH – c. July 1291 CE · 5 Rajab 690 AH

The Sufi poet of the 'absolute unity' circle — the Sunni source brands him among the 'zinadiqa of the Sufis' yet concedes none of the charges was verified; Ibn Sab'in praised him above his own master al-Qunawi; author of Sharh Asma' Allah al-Husna, Sharh Mawaqif al-Niffari and a diwan; on his deathbed: 'he who knows God cannot fear Him' 1.

    Overview

'Afif al-Din al-Tilimsani, the poet-littérateur — among the greats of the ta'ifa professing absolute unity, as the Sunni source presents him, calling him one of the zanadiqa of the sufis and relaying grave accusations against him, then admitting none of it is established by a sound route; Ibn Sab'in praised him and preferred him over his own shaykh al-Qunawi. 1

    Works and death

His works: a commentary on God's beautiful names, on al-Niffari's Mawaqif, on the Nusus, and a diwan. Ibn al-Fashusha al-Katibi said: I entered on him the day he died and he said — "how should one who knows God fear Him? By God, since I knew Him I have not feared Him, and I rejoice at meeting Him." 1
