Overview

Al-'Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah was a brother of the first Abbasid caliphs, Abu l-'Abbas al-Saffah and Abu Ja'far al-Mansur, and an uncle of the dynasty's founders. 2

Career

He helped retake Malatya in 139/756. Three years later al-Mansur made him governor of al-Jazira and its neighbouring frontier district. He was dismissed in 155/772, but his name keeps appearing in the years that followed, although he played little political part. He distinguished himself often in the wars against the Byzantines. In 159/775–6 al-Mahdi put him at the head of the troops mustered for an expedition into Asia Minor, and he carried out that charge with great success. 2

Death

He died in 186/802. 2
