Al-Mustaʿin bi-Llah, the Abbasid
Commander of the Faithful al-Mustaʿin Abu al-Fadl al-ʿAbbas ibn al-Mutawakkil ibn al-Muʿtadid. He was established in the caliphate in Rajab 808 AH by a charge from his father. He was also installed as a sultan alongside the caliphate for a time, until al-Muʾayyad became sultan. Al-Muʾayyad then removed him from the caliphate, installed his brother Dawud in it, gave him the title al-Muʿtadid, and imprisoned al-Mustaʿin in Alexandria. He remained there until Tatar, who was speaking in the realm, sent for his release and gave him leave to come to Cairo. He chose to remain in Alexandria, because he found it pleasant and gained a great deal of money from trade.
He died there as a martyr of the plague in 833 AH and left behind a son, Jaʿdi 1.
