    Club career

Ali began playing at Al-Mesaimeer at the age of seven, then joined the Aspire Academy and the youth setup of Lekhwiya; he also spent time in the youth system of the Belgian club Eupen. In July 2015 he joined the Austrian club LASK, scoring his only Bundesliga goal on 27 November 2015 against Floridsdorfer AC. In January 2016 he moved to Cultural Leonesa in Spain, where on 3 April 2016 he became the first Qatari footballer to score in a Spanish league. 1

He returned to Lekhwiya for the 2016–17 season, winning the Qatar Stars League and the league's best under-23 player award, and stayed through the club's rebranding as Al-Duhail, winning further league titles in 2017–18, 2019–20 and 2022–23. He now captains the club. 1

    International career

Ali was part of the Qatar under-19 team that won the 2014 AFC Under-19 Championship and played at the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup; he was top scorer at the 2018 AFC Under-23 Championship with six goals. His official senior debut came on 8 August 2016 against Iraq. 1

At the 2019 Asian Cup he scored four goals in 51 minutes against North Korea, twice against Saudi Arabia, his eighth of the tournament in the semi-final against the United Arab Emirates, and the opening goal of the final against Japan with a bicycle kick — nine goals in one edition, breaking the record he had shared with Ali Daei of Iran. The UAE federation protested his eligibility after the semi-final; the AFC dismissed the protest, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport settled the case in 2020. He scored at the 2019 Copa América and was top scorer of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup with four goals, making him the only player to have scored at the Asian Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup. He played all three of Qatar's matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and at the 2023 Asian Cup he scored in the opening match against Lebanon and the winning goal in the semi-final against Iran as Qatar retained the title. On 16 November 2023, with four goals against Afghanistan, he passed Mansour Muftah to become Qatar's all-time top scorer. 1
