Scholarly career
Konaré was born in Kayes, the fourth son of a Fula homemaker, and went to primary school there before studying in Bamako, Dakar and Katibougou, then reading history at the École Normale Supérieure of Bamako, at the University of Warsaw and later in Geneva. 1 He taught at lycées in Kayes, Markala and Bamako, worked on historic patrimony and ethnography at the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture, and became a professor in the History and Geography department at the École Normale Supérieure of Bamako. 1 Between 1989 and 1992 he was president of ICOM, the International Council of Museums, and he served as a consultant for UNESCO and the UNDP. 1
Presidency
Konaré led the ADEMA party and won the presidency in 1992, in the democratic opening that followed the fall of Moussa Traoré and a transitional government, and was re-elected for a second term ending in 2002. 1 Shortly before leaving office, on 29 May 2002, he pardoned the imprisoned former president Moussa Traoré and his wife, for the sake of national reconciliation. 2

A note on the record
No text in the English or Arabic article names Konaré's religion, and the Arabic article's infobox religion field is blank; the only statement found anywhere is Wikidata's single structured value, Sunni Islam. 1 3 4 A single structured value does not attest, so the museum records his faith as unknown and preserves the reading in the data file.
